Know what you mean Tricky but i can understand some of the 'attitude' these salesmen have.To have endless timewasters plus their mates, mob your shop daily ( weekends especially ), checking this out, fiddling with that, grilling your brain on your product knowledge and then walking out without even buying a pick would piddle most folk off......and these same 'customers' return week after week and do the same. Music shop owners are a hardy breed, the patience of Saints.....but probably, thanks to internet shopping and a lack of support from local musos, a DYING breed.
Their stock is dictated by two things. Firstly, to make a decent profit on a single instrument they need to order in bulk ( dealership ) and get a discount . You need some serious kudos these days to be accepted by a supplier for consideration for this. Far easier to sell budget instruments while you tread water whilst building up your trading reputation.
At the end of the day, it's also WHERE the shop is located. This area is dire. DEAD. Over the last few years i've seen two shops hit the skids and close. One stocked so much high end stuff nobody in the area could afford to buy any of it. The other was stocking budget gear and was the busiest of the two.
The shops will go the same way as the venues we miss...unless local support is given.
