Saxal
(Manchester)

New to Manchester (since the end of November), Sax and Guitar (50) wants to join or form happy hobby covers band.
Ideally I want to play at the weekend. For example, 40 gigs per year (but I have done 52 before now). I am reliable (which is more than I can say for a lot of people on here).
If I have to form a band I require a collaborator Guitarist (and vocal would be good) to get together two sets of happy pub songs together that make the audience sing and dance. Getting bass and drums can be done after two sets have been created (as getting two sets together with a full band is complicated to arrange rehearsals etc.). Also, in my experience, drummers and bass players want to go straight to gigs.
Alternatively doing a duo would be OK but this is third choice.
My concept is to do classic hits (and some more modern songs if we could do a good version) for the adults who go to their nice local pub at the weekend (i.e. not playing to the young people in the coke strewn city centre - where parking and loading the gear is very difficult). When I have done this previously we were asked to do other gigs (e.g. weddings and parties) as a bonus. We also had regular return gigs at the places we played.
Consider the range of possible songs below:
Baker Street
Come up and see me (make me smile)
Our House
One Step Beyond
Common People – Pulp
Rehab (Amy Winehouse version)
Valerie
Born to Run (I have a guitar arrangement and would love to do this in a pub and do sax solo)
Starman
Sorrow
Get it On
Hot Love
Whisky in the jar (Thin Lizzy version)
I fought the law (and the law won - Clash version)
I’m a believer
Love is the drug
Together (Roxy Music)
Moondance
Rebel yell (Billy Idol)
White Wedding
Give a little bit (Supertramp)
Crazy little thing called Love
I kissed a girl and I liked it (hope my dear wife don't mind it)
Get Lucky (Daft Punk)
Play that funky music
Superstition (I’ll be playing the sax riff – to do this someone else has to be able to do the vocal)
Shine on you crazy diamond (a short version in the style of unplugged one without the off key start)
Anything by Ian Dury that is doable
Many others I haven’t thought of or have not yet heard …
Some of these songs I have only done the sax bits to (e.g. superstition), or guitar bits (e.g. come up and see me chords and solo, whisky in the jar chords and solo), and some tunes I have just thought of. However, these tunes are all easily playable and I can do sax bits or guitar bits to fit around another musician. Once two sets are established we would be in the driver’s seat to choose bass and drum players at our discretion and get gigs.
If it is relevant my own taste includes some Tom Waits, songs that have their individual merits, some Nick Cave and Ian Dury, but I would be happy playing hit covers that go down well and playing nice pubs on a regular basis.
Reliability is a must. Mature musician welcome. Younger and into this project is OK too.
Will reply by Sunday – Monday at the latest.
I look forward to hearing relevant replies.
