An Idea I had years ago and never got around to, I’m bored, looking for something to do, originally a guitarist, now play tenor sax, can do lead and backing vocal and at a push limited keys. Check out Urban Voodoo Machine and Jim Jones Allstars as an idea of look and style.
Looking for experienced musicians, age, sex, blah blah blah not important. You don’t have to be a pro or genius, probably play at home, picked up yer instrument again and want to do something, but must be able to carry a tune and perform as a band member, play for the song, not your ego, I don’t want to babysit anyone. Studio time and then occasional gig. Would rather get all instruments, except bass, guitar and drums sorted first... plant of 4 and 6 stringers out there!
The outline to my cunning plan: Looking ahead, cover versions done in a unique Tom Waits / Festival style, I'm really not interested in songwriting originals, been there, done that. Dress up and perform them well, leaving people saying “Wow, that was fun”. All for the fun of it, if we scratch a bit of cash together, fine, but it’s more about the enjoyment and performing… if it gets that far!
I’d like to get a mix of instruments, I’m really open to anything as long as it can be heard in a band setting, violin, saw, uke, theremin, any brass, whatever, spoons might be pushing it a bit ha ha!.
Drums wise, a really stripped back kit like Stray Cats. Ideally some bass instrument, bass cello / upright bass, electric bass. Vocal wise I’d rather have a mix of us who can play and sing, mix it up a bit, so there’s no “designated” person fronting it.
No idea is a bad idea, give it a go, if it sounds awful, onto the next song.
A couple of suggestions, bare in mind they can be twisted into something beautiful, Bowie Heroes, Pulp Common People, Ace of Spades Motorhead, War Edwin Star, anything is a possibility, so a flexible approach and imagination is a great starting point?
It’s a brain fart of an idea, it could take off or fall flat on it’s arse, but could be fun, obvs get in a studio, bash it out, see what happens and take it from there. Simples!
