Re-posting an ad because life got in the way the last couple of months and I'm now at a point where I've got a balance.
34 male singer looking for a band. I have enjoyed writing a few songs in the past, generally chilled acoustic stuff since it was just me, my guitar and neighbours who weren't into noise!
I've got a fairly clean tenor voice, bit of croak and chest (but not the awesome rasp of Stereophonics) and trying to train it with lessons at the moment. I've only just started lessons a few months ago, so while my teacher reckons I have definitely got natural talent and can get cracking with performing, it's going to get a LOT better over the next year. I think I am very good, but if you're looking for someone already at a serious professional level or go touring, I'm not your guy I'm afraid. Mainly because I have a full time job and established career. Not quite ready to leave that yet.
Reasonably wide variety of interests centering around rock:
Classic: The Beatles, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Eagles to AC/DC, Black Crows, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Van Halen, The Police, Eric Clapton, The Who, Black Sabbath, Bad Company and so on. My range is not super high yet, so AC/DC would be a struggle.
Indie: Travis, The Kooks, The Shins, Pavement, The Lemonheads, Guster, Beck, Weezer, Band of Skulls, Everclear, Ash, Elliott Smith, The Strokes, Jet, Spoon, Brendan Benson, The Wombats, Athlete, The Zutons etc.. My clean voice suits this kind of music pretty well.
Some Stoner/Grunge/etc: QOTSA, Stone Temple Pilots, 3 Doors Down, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Monster Magnet, Royal Blood. I suit QOTSA extremely well - I'm about to gush over that.
I also love stoner rock and am a HUGE fan of Queens of The Stone Age. My voice fits QOTSA very well indeed, except for screaming, which I just can't do! I would absolutely LOVE to do music like QOTSA. Those eerie tones...they are freaking awesome.
I can also have a bluesy quality, or go for the plainer and cleaner Kinks/Beatles sound. What I can't do, and I must stress, is those gravel tones or shouting. Wish I could, but I'm not built that way and I don't want to push that direction and do permanent damage.
I'm trying to explore different genres in my own singing lessons since I can happily enjoy singing tunes I wouldn't normally listen to when I'm unwinding or chucking something on in the car.
More hobbyist, so will happily commit to frequent sessions though not expecting to make a career/living from music, but you never know. I've not got much experience of gigging - just a few open mic night type things years ago, but more than happy to do my homework, practise and dive in.
I'll admit, I'm a bit rubbish on guitar these days and to be honest, I think I'm better off concentrating on nailing vocals. I think I could get really, really good.
Very happy to write songs with a band that's addicted to bouncing ideas around and pushing me outside of my comfort zone. My songwriting has always been a personal, processing exercise, so think along the lines of Elliott Smith or Mason Jennings. Solo dude with thoughtful lyrics and an acoustic kind of thing.
Give me a shout, particularly if you have a QOTSA vibe or are looking to play covers like that. Happy to record myself doing songs you're interested in or live audition. Though easier if I can practise what you're into a bit and record!
