Hi, we are a folk band based in Longsight consisting of leftie queer types looking for a soprano to join our group. Current band members are aged 30, 28, and 26.
We are a working, gigging band paid at Musician's Union rates.
We perform a mixture of genres under the folk banner, including traditional tunes for ceilidhs, folk carols at wassails, west gallery sacred folk hymns, protest anthems, and contemporary chamber choral music.
Our main inspirations are Lady Maisery, Coope Boyes and Simpson, The Watersons, The Younguns, The Cooper Family, Pete and Peggy Seeger.
Our three current members sing alto/tenor, tenor/baritone, and baritone/bass, so we are sorely missing a high voice part. It is essential that anyone replying to this message is willing and able to sing soprano (and occasionally alto) parts to a high standard.
It is desirable (but not essential) that you can also play a folk-appropriate instrument or instruments, such as fiddle/whistle/pipes or mandolin/guitar, or competently play an orchestral instrument you could learn the tunes on. We are particularly keen to get a cellist if possible. It is also preferable that you can sing from sheet music, it doesn't matter if your sight-reading isn't great as long as you can follow what's happening.
It should be noted that the three of us also (fairly) regularly attend church, and often sing sacred music. It is not at all required for you to be Christian or even have a faith at all, just a willingness to occasionally sing songs that happen to mention Jesus.
We rehearse in a vegan household. Rehearsals are once a week on Tuesday or Friday, sometimes twice a week right before a gig. The rehearsals themselves are fairly serious and disciplined, but there is ample opportunity before and after for hanging out and socialising.
If successful, we will get back to you with an opportunity to meet us and hang out with us during a rehearsal, to see if the vibes fit, and work from there. We look forward to hearing from you!
