Anyone else sick of the “modern metal” sound? Every band sounding the same? Super tight GJANK GJANK GJANK guitar sound? Typewriter drums? Heavily compressed, super clean production? Mid-tempo plodding sound, not fast enough to be exciting, not slow enough to be heavy…
Sick of the retro thing? People trying in vain to relive the past, ripping off their heroes while missing the point of what made them great?
Tired of bands that take a lazy approach to originality and end up creating the musical equivalent of fusion food?
I don’t want to be retro or modern, I just want to make music.
I want to play loud as f uck through real amps with a saggy, thick guitar sound.
I want to play with a drummer with a nice sounding kit, big cymbals and a loud snare they hit rim shots on.
I want to play with a bassist that makes the earth tremble.
I want to play with a vocalist that doesn’t put on the “I’m tough” act and do shouty vocals down the mic whilst making angry faces. I’d love it if they could actually sing.
I’d love to play with anyone else that can add to the band with an instrument I’m not thinking of.
I’m ok with not taking the logical approach to emotive things.
I want to play heavy music, but not angry music – because I’m not an angry person and I don’t like surrounding myself with angry people.
I want to play in an apolitical band. If you are of the school of thought that believes that’s impossible then I don’t think it'll work out between us.
I want to play with people that love music and aren’t afraid of being creative.
I want to love the lyrics because of their abstract beauty, not because of any social message/life story.
I want to play in a band that doesn’t model themselves on anyone and has members that all want to serve the band and help it find its own sound and identity.
I have a job and a family and am not looking to “make it” as a professional musician. However, I do ultimately want to put out records and do short tours – which I think is achievable if everyone can plan ahead, meet commitments and be realistic with our expectations of each other. I don’t want to rehearse every evening, but when we arrange a rehearsal I’d expect everyone would turn up and give it their all. I am very laid back and chill but I’d be keen to put the effort in and get the band moving.
I’m hesitant to list influences as I feel like straight away that sets the tone for the band, but as I guide of what I don’t want to do I don’t like dream theatre and I’m instantly on the back foot if a band is described as “post…” or “…core” (despite liking a lot of bands that fall into those categories). If you shout “YES!!” when AC/DC comes on the jukebox and hate all electronic music because it doesn’t have guitars, then we probably won’t gel. If you are the kind of person that picks up a guitar at a party then we likely have different motivations for playing music. If you hate new music because its new, or old music because its old then I doubt we’ll click. That all being said, I ultimately don’t really care what music you like, so long as we share the same vision for the band and can work together.
I believe that music is subjective, and any objective arguments about good and bad music can only be based around the technical ability of the performers or the compositional techniques, both of which I believe are so minor when you think of all the wonderful things that you can express with/absorb from music. By way of metaphor, if you go to a blacksmith to make you a sword you pick up some of the swords they’ve made and see how they feel in your hand, you don’t go into their workshop and examine their hammer and anvil. So, if you think about music being good or bad then we probably aren’t on the same page.
I’m not bothered about your age, gender, or anything so long as you are cool, low drama, aren’t hateful and are reliable. In many ways it would be cool to have members that are all different as we can all learn from each other as people and musicians.
What do I bring to the table? I’m 42, which I appreciate may put a lot of people off working with me, but I’ve been playing in bands consistently since I was 12 years old so have a lot of experience including shows all over the UK, albums released, festival appearances, international shows etc. In other words, I may no longer be a teenager, but I’m not suddenly having a midlife crisis and digging my guitar out from under my bed – the one constant in my life has been playing in bands. I try to be a good person and I won’t be a dick to you. I’m not high maintenance and I won’t bring any drama to the table.
I appreciate I’ve maybe put a lot of people off with the length of this post, but I just wanted to be upfront about a few things that can be dealbreakers for people, whilst maybe weeding out some people that aren’t serious! I don’t want to waste your time or mine. If you’re still reading, interested and want to have a chat about ideas, please give me a shout and let’s see if we think we will work well together to create something.
