I’d love to get a band together. But more than anything, I’m looking for a regular get-together with like-minded people: a chance to have a laugh, make some friends, be sociable and do something creative together. Playing some great songs and getting them sounding good. Doing the odd friendly local gig would be an added bonus.
I’m 54 and play drums. I’m not a bad player, but I know my limitations! I stepped away from my last band a couple of years ago and have really started to miss it. I’m keen to get back behind the kit, meet some new people and have some fun along the way.
Musically, I’m thinking covers, but with a bit of focus so we all know what we’re signing up for. Maybe 90s classics or Britpop, for example. I think it’s important though to have a shared direction rather than jump from 70s rock to disco to 00s pop, or choosing songs just to showcase an individual’s talent.
In terms of the line-up, I’m thinking drums (obviously!), bass, vocals and two guitars — or one guitar and keys. But it doesn't have to stop there.
And it definitely doesn’t need to be a group of middle-aged blokes. A mix of ages, backgrounds and personalities would be great. The important thing is that we’re all on the same page about why we’re doing it.
For me, personality comes first, ability second. You don’t have to be an amazing musician or have years of experience. I’d much rather play with someone who’s still learning, is enthusiastic and easy to get along with than someone with a huge ego. I’ve learned from experience that being in a band is about a lot more than playing your instrument!
Ultimately, it should be fun. If we enjoy getting together, have a laugh and get on well, that will come across in the music too. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to sound good, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of enjoying ourselves.
So, is anyone else in a similar position? Maybe you used to play in bands, fancy getting back into it, or have always wanted to give it a go. If you’re looking for a sociable, relaxed group of people to make music with, I’d love to hear from you.
No big egos, no pressure, just good people, good songs and a good time.
Who’s up for it?
