Hi
I'm looking to put together a covers band to play gigs locally in Leeds and potentially all round the north once we get going. I want to play with other musicians who enjoy playing live, who like having a good time and who don't want to play the same old tired tunes you seem to hear every band doing.
I have lots of experience playing in bands when I lived abroad and always found the simple rules work best: get together a very eclectic setlist, have fun and not take yourselves too seriously. There's nothing better than making a racket with some other like-minded people who love to play.
I play guitar and sing and so at a minimum I am looking for a bassist and drummer. Another guitar player wouldn't go amiss either and if you could sing harmony that's a bonus! Roles in the band don't have to be fixed - we can always do the old switcheroo and swap instruments for songs. The plan would be to get some practices in and then look for some gigs.
My idea would be for us to choose the songs we wanted to play together and not be too strict about genres. My taste is very eclectic but there are definitely some songs that lend themselves better to a 3-4 piece guitar band. To give you an idea of some of the songs that would feature in sets when I used to play:
QOTSA - Feel good hit of the summer
Led Zeppelin - Rock and roll
Mint Chicks - I don't want to grow old
Radiohead - Just
Pixies - Monkey gone to heaven and Gouge away
Rancid - Lady Liberty
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Backwoods
Rolling Stones - 19th nervous breakdown
Allman Brothers - Rambling man
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Straight up and down
Jerry Lee Lewis - Highschool Confidential
Mando Diao - The Band
The Libertines - Death on the stairs
Nirvana - Aneurysm
Jefferson Airplane - somebody to love
Iggy and the Stooges - Search and Destroy
Sublime - 5446/ball and chain
Manic Street Preachers - Motown Junk
Foster the People - pumped up kicks
Arctic Monkeys - Dancing Shoes
Against Me! - Sink, Florida, Sink
The Beatles - Don't let me down
Bob Dylan - From a Buick 6
It's a bit all over the place but I've found that audiences love hearing this stuff. It's different and it means they don't have to listen to Sweet Home Alabama and Sex on Fire for the 20th time.
If you're interested it would be great to hear from you.
Cheers
Jim
