I’m a solo multi-instrument studio-based creator looking to collaborate with other musicians to create new music centred in traditional sources. I’m particularly looking to work with vocalists who can work in Gàidhlig and English and instrumentalists who can bring older or unusual instruments into the mix and that these collaborators can bring other traditions and genres to the work, from modern to historic.
Remote collaboration will work fine (providing you can make reasonable recordings), or in person if you are within lower Scottish Highlands or Central Belt.
My own music is more instrumental film-score than verse-chorus songs, and has a foot firmly in traditional music, with much use of electro-acoustic, ambient and classical music approaches.
I invite you to listen to some of my previous output and see if there is something that gives you ideas. Can I add something to your own musical creations? Could you add something to my music?
Future projects which I am planning:
Project 1. I’m developing an album of ancient Gàidhlig poetry set in music, as both spoken word and sung (hence the need to a vocalist who can tackle the Gàidhlig. I speak the language), intercut with translations into English where that works for the piece. I have only two poems in mind at the moment, so it’s all to play for.
I can imagine a process of sending ideas back and forward between us as audio stems until a piece of music develops, then a more specific approach of “what does this track, this song, this poem need to finish it?”
If any given track is just a collection of possible ingredients, I am very familiar with collaging sound together into a cogent whole.
Equally, I am happy to follow your lead on any given track or for you to suggest a traditional piece or new riff as the start-point.
The purpose of this project?
• To create something unusual, respectful yet innovating on the tradition.
• To release the collection as a download album via Bandcamp.
• To build relationships with musicians that might be mutually beneficial at another time.
Project 2. A version of the The Cure’s A Forest, using traditional and acoustic instruments only, inspired by the Orchestra Obsolete’s version of Blue Monday.

I am thinking of then adding to this two other pieces of music, each forest-inspired. You write one and I play on it; I write one and you play on it. Then we have a collection – “The Forest Suite” – for release. “Three Pieces Called A Forest” perhaps?

My first Album The Harps’ Cry which has two singers, some very old pieces from the Gaelteachd, traditional story (I’m a storyteller), much use of found nature sound and some pieces that treat ancient tunes with modern developments.

A remote collaboration project done during lockdown, 9 musicians, none of whom I had worked with before. It is a traditional tune and a new song in an extended tone poem, gifted to our local arts centre and now referred to as “An Anthem for Strathearn”.
