My band is on a bit of a break, duration unknown, and I'm itching to do something loud and dumb and fun before the enthusiasm leaves me.
The idea is simple: scrappy three chord punk covers of non punk things.
The vibe is the range of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the silliness of Presidents of the United States of America, the fuzzy tone of Blue-era Weezer, the energy of Teenage Bottlerocket. (The vibe is not the flashy, gimmicky bits of Punk Rock Factory, or the polished nature of NFG's From the Screen to Your Stereo, or the faithful reproductions on Weezer's Teal album. Not that those things aren't great, they're just not scrappy enough.)
Good reference points:
- Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – anything, really! But great examples are: Country Roads, Science Fiction / Double Feature, Blowin' in the Wind, Good 4 U, The Times They Are a Changin'
- The Goops – Build Me Up Buttercup
- The Ataris – Boys of Summer
- Goldfinger – 99 Red Balloons
- Presidents of the United States of America - Ça Plane Pour Moi
I know punk covers have been done before, but I'm not expecting to take over the world with this. I am a "grown up" - early forties, kids, boring job, mortgage - so I don't have unlimited time or energy for practice or travel or whatever. Maybe we'll play some shows? Who knows! Who cares! I'm just looking for some mates in the local area to get together and bash out some tunes.
I'm a bassist / guitarist / occasional vocalist (preference is to play bass, can do some vocals if absolutely necessary) looking for like-minded folk in or around York, so if you are in a similar place life-wise, and you want to get involved in something dumb, give me a shout.
Cheers!
