AN OPEN LETTER TO JOIN MY BAND ADMIN...
Thursday 26 Apr 2018, 2:50pm
I've contacted admin before about the issues with this site but got no response, so i thought i'd just write an open letter to them for everyone to see. Please comment below positive or negative, though everyone must agree with at least some of it...
This site could be a great resource for musicians, but it's just so full of junk, repeat and pointless posts that it ultimately just makes it too difficult to find people. Again, this could be a great place to put the right musicians together, but it's failing, hardly any posts have any replies though they have lots of views, you should try to think about why this is. It's clear that you don't though, this site is not evolving and there has been no change or improvement at all for as long as i've been a member, i'll try to illustrate at least some of the problems as best i can.
"Guitarist looking for band, contact for details". What use is that? If you're actually looking for musicians to work with you have to constantly trawl through so much utterly pointless crap like this. It says absolutely nothing and forces a time consuming and usually fruitless exchange that wastes time and needn't have happened. This site needs mandatory fields for posting ads, an entire section dedicated to those who have links to their music, and those who don't, and filters to narrow the search down significantly.
You should not be able to leave a post like that, it just takes up space, it will never get a reply and is of no use to anyone, least of all the OP who will simply grow more and more frustrated at the lack of responses. It doesn't matter that they are too naive to see that it's their mistake in the first place, but it's your failure that is allowing such a waste of a post to be published at all. Posts like this annoyingly constitute about half of all posts, making the already painful trawl just too much to bother with.
A limit of one post per person per week. Say all you need to say in one ad, not multiple ads with "Bassist needed", Drummer needed", "Lead guitarist needed", all for one person, this person is looking for a band, or is trying to put together a new band, they could just say that! "Lead Guitarist and Vocalist looking for Rhythm, Bass and Drums", or a band! Simple. ONE AD PER PERSON PER WEEK! Also, there is no need to post the same ad in multiple regions if you get rid of the regionalised index altogether.
This is one of the biggest problems, i know it might seem to make sense to regionalise posts but it just doesn't work in practice. I'm in Herts, meaning if i'm looking for local musicians, i would be searching in all surrounding local areas, e.g, Herts, Beds, Bucks, Cambs, Essex, London etc. Not to mention the fact that serious musicians will travel great distances to work with the right people, but it's extremely tedious and unnecessary to have to search all regions individually, it would take literally hours to peruse every ad in every region, most i assume give up after a short time like i do, frustrated and no better off for it, especially as the vast majority of ads do not include any links to audio, or are as vacant as the example above. A single message board with filters is the way to go, with mandatory fields for posters to fill in enabling the filtering, you then simply filter by whatever your requirements are, distance radius, skills offered/required, age, links to audio Yes/No etc, common sense stuff...
Put featured ads on the first page only, not page 2, 3, 4, 5 etc... We've already read them once on the first page, what's the point in having them on every page? See for yourself, go to the London tab and read through the first few pages, then see how annoying it is that you have to scroll down half the page of the same featured ads on every subsequent page to get to the actual ads on the those pages that you haven't already read, common sense again is in order here, it is not possible to jump straight to "London" page 2, there is no way to not see the featured ads on page one!!!
The big one for me though is links to audio, and not just admin that are guilty here. It's this simple, if you do not include a link to some of your music or performances thus enabling interested parties to assess your skill level, one or more of the following things are true:
1. You don't have any = Amateur.
Any musician who has done anything will have some form of recording, if you don't, because you haven't done anything, or you are embarrassed to post it, you are by definition an amateur, and it should be possible to filter you out of searches. Conversely, amateurs should be able to more easily search for other amateurs, which is very common on here, i dare say though that life on here is easier for casual musicians, as they are usually searching very locally and talent level is less of an issue, but what about professional outfits where money is involved, or those interested in putting together a serious project? Where location is mostly irrelevant and skills are everything! Think!
2. You are worried about being plagiarised = Dillusional.
Lets be honest, if it's that easy and even possible at all to plagiarise your music, it's probably not very good anyway, and even if the worst happens, everything is digital now, it's very easy to prove when something was written, you don't have post tapes to yourself anymore!!! Also, if their head is that far up their own arse, I want to filter them out too.
3. You don't know how to post your music online: See example 1
4. You have "label interest" are holding "auditions" and insist others send you their demos first before being invited to try out, even though you're the ones looking and posting these wild claims but refuse to back them up with evidence of your talent:
See examples 1 and 2.
I've turned up to too many rehearsal rooms in the past just to find some supposedly great band are a bunch of dreamers with six thumbs on each hand and with all the gear but no idea. It's awkward and a waste of everyones time.
Always post links if you can people, but i urge Join My Band to put some actual effort into this site and introduce filters that make it possible to only search for those with links! None of this would require any more input from admin than the site does now after setting it up, the difference though would be that it might actually work a bit better for musicians trying to find each other, which i think is the whole point of this site is it not?
Yours sincerely,
DM.
