These things are supposed to be honest so here goes... i will not apologise in advance for any 'JoinMyBand ad cliches'... you knew they were coming...
I'm a mid twenties guitarist and bit-part songwriter. I have basically been a dormant musician since the last time I played a live gig (2012, I think). Prior to this I was gigging regularly, played in bands heavily through high school & into university years where I "studied" music (mostly got drunk, I justified it by listening to piss loads of music...)
I guess this post could be split into two parts...
First of all, In a bid to get back into making music and enable me to get my thoughts and ideas organised and recorded (...and regain some sanity), I bought loads of brand new home studio kit including **cliche kit list disclaimer** an iMac with logic X, Some piece of sampling and 'beat making' hardware called an NI Machine or maschine or whatever it's called, the Mk2 one... It is completely alien to me either way. Also bought a midi keyboard, some big ass studio monitors, an audio interface, a boss ME80 digital guitar thing & a load more crap ...problem is I don't know how to use any of it. I did a BTEC in music technology back when I was in high school, but all the projects I worked on were analog based and to be honest everything I did post high school was too. I guess that's where you come in! By that I don't mean I want someone who knows how to use it to teach me for free... I fully welcome someone who hasn't got a f***king clue and wants to try and work out what the piss any of the stuff does...
Secondly, i would love to find some people who are up for finding somewhere that we can jam... Loud. Again, i'm fully up for anything - if you have song ideas and want someone to play guitar on them, i'm up for that. If you are just starting to play drums or an other instrument and just want to get better at jamming in E for 6hrs straight, i'm up for that too. I'm not really fussed what kind of music we play, that's the beauty of jamming, ultimately it won't sound like any genre... it will sound like you do normally, and like I do normally, playing whatever we do in a room. (mind blowing thought, i know).
sh*t story... but... I grew up in a house that had a f***king massive garage and a Marshall Stack in it and our nearest neighbour lived 200 meters away. This was a dangerous combination for a teenager with soft parents who was learning to play guitar... plus, my neighbour was a proper tw*t so i made sure it was loud as hell at all times. Due to this however, I have a huge need to get into a room and play at full volume, but if you can't do that and you want to have a headphone jam or acoustic jam or whatever, feel free to come round to my place.
If trying to explain my music taste..... *cliche paragraph** It's pretty f***king weird tbh. The best way to sum it up in a sentence would be: I like pretty much any music, by an artist of any style or genre, just so long as the artist that made it, did it for the right f***king reason. I know it's a massively pretentious sentence... and there are probably examples of music that I like that were solely written to sell records or make money, but it seems like the most honest way to sum it up for me. For whatever reason it may be, my music taste leans massively in favour of music from pre-2000. Dunno why, just does.
**further cliche** Rough list of music that i love... or have been massively into at some point in time.
Frank Zappa, Beefheart... and the whole prog scene from Floyd to Dream Theater.
John Frusciante & the chili peppers - both a massive part of my youth, still big into Fru's solo music today.
Jimmy Page & Led zep, Sabbath, and much of the classic rock scene.
The Prodigy, Aphex Twin and recently big into the late 80's early 90's house/techno/rave music thing. Was always into prodigy but saw a few documentaries about house music & the rave culture and somehow got hooked on a genre that if you had mentioned it's name to me 10 years ago i could have spat on the ground (not really but you get my point).
Tool, Warpaint, Hendrix, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Jeff Buckley, Jack White & White Stripes, early Kings of Leon (must stress 'early'), Nick drake,
Massive Attack, portishead, Tricky, Zero 7 and that whole southwest trip hop scene tbh.
Basically a sh*t load of bands. Of course there's loads of other stuff, but the above take up the bulk of my most played since I was 10 years old.
I have a strange work schedule that means I work from home for good parts of the year, and away for the rest. Roughly 60/40 home & away. This is the main reason I've not really been in any bands or done much for a few years (that being said, i've not really tried to either). I will be working away in London from the beginning of November, through to start of January. Then i'm back in Leeds again until June.
Anyway, talked waffling sh*t for far too long now... so, If you fancy having a jam, or want to come round and try and record a tune either before the end of the month, or when i'm home in January then let me know.
Yours truly,
The guy with all the gear and no idea.
