Drinking before performance

See if BIMM has a situation vacant board why not give them a call and see also could try Northbrook college in worthing, if you can play and your stuff is half decent then you should get a few who would like to adition as they all have to have practical experience in their courses

It happens all the time. Music attracts dreamers and we've all been there. I've auditioned guitarists who can't play power chords and singers who don't hold a note. It works both ways too I reckon I'm a pretty mediocre musician but I got my last job over 15 others, just how bad were they? I wonder how many bands I didn't apply for because I assumed I wouldn't be good enough.
The only thing you can do practically is to be careful with your ad wording. Especially with free sites like JMB. If you want an experienced vocalist then ask for a gigging musician, that rules out people looking for a first band. If you are playing originals then you've got a problem. A singer or guitarist is going to want a creative input, even some control to make it worth their while investing in your songs. If they aren't bothered about that they'd join a covers band where they will gig regularly and get paid more. Knowing how to offer enough to attract the right person without attracting cranks and daydreamers is a hard one to solve.
The other thing is to be clear about what you expect at an audition. It has to be fun and non threatening or nerves will get to them but make it clear you are serious. Tell them the songs you want to do, send them mp3's and chord sheets as a minimum to show you too are putting some work in. Probably offer them the choice of a song to sing which you will have to learn. You want to hear their best. Knowing they are expected to put a few hours in to prepare for an audition will scare off the 'amateurs' but any sensible musician will have expected that, well you'd think so.
Good luck

You can spend hours wording your advert however you want it will still attract the time wasters , cranks and trolls even if you pay for an ad it increases the volume of bell ends responding as it does the volume of genuine applicants. Most don't bother to read an ad or pay no heed to influences or such criteria . In my experience the genuine band seekers are found elswhere I have found the more pro active and straightforward people are the ones who will met for a chat within days and jam within a fortnight of contact being made.
If you are auditioning a decent and creative guitarist and expect them to play power chords it's no suprise that things go tits up as power chords make me want to fall asleep both as a player and a listener.
And touching on the original posters predicament about singers; well mate if you can find a decent singer who does not meet your blue print I would just go with them. The band in your head is never going to be the perfect band in your life but if you manage to group together a bunch of talented individuals who might not share the same musical influences but share the same drive passion and ability go with it. As you know yourself finding talented reliable people is the main struggle in itself nevermind finding a perfect fit.

I'd say 90% or more of the people on here DO fall into the categories of 'dreamer' or 'bell end' as Tricky Donovan so eloquently stated above..... There ARE the occasional serious AND talented musician/vocalist on here, one of the vocalists i currently work with contacted me on here and a couple of years later we are making some fantastic music with the rest of our team, but i've had to wade through literally dozens of wannabes, idiots, time wasters, no hopers and just general bell ends (they know who they are!!).
It's not just singers who are delusional, as also stated there are myriad 'guitarists' who can't even form a 'power chord'.... power chord is a misnomer anyway as root and fifth is a HARMONIC INTERVAL and NOT a chord.
There are a LOT of younger people on here too which IS fantastic as it's great to see them taking an interest in music and not just the many distractions teens and young adults have today, but the majority of them either wanna be in the next iron maiden or if female paramore..... kind of understandable to some extent as they're young and haven't really had the time to experience much of the music the world has to offer but even so the majority seem to want to just be some kind of ersatz 'flavour of the month' metal/indie or 'symphonic metal' band instead of trying to create something of their own..... pretty much EVERY highly successful artist or band have their own sound and vibe which is usually identifiable within the first bar or so of a song...... everyone seems to want to be the next big thing but aren't willing to put the time, effort and money into it........ still, it just makes room for those of us who CAN actually play/sing/write/record/produce etc....
I've started weeding out idiots by asking for some kind of recording up front, even audio from a mobile phone is acceptable for an initial contact..... in fact i would rather hear that over a 'studio' recording as it's unlikely to have been messed with by editing or timing/pitch correction in melodyne or similar..... surprisingly i have yet to receive even ONE recording since coming up with the idea..... it's a fantastic way of weeding out the bellends, if someone either cannot be bothered to take the time and trouble to sing or play a few bars into their mobile and then upload then there's no way they're gonna get within a hundred miles of my studio.... .top tip for the day! Most of our team are either pro or semi-pro and ALL of our vocalists are quite happy to send me rough ideas this way so if it's good enough for someone who makes all or a significant amount of their living from music it's good enough for some dickhead who fancies themselves as the next liam gallagher/bruce dickinson/lilly allen etc....
oh and WTF is a 'clean' vocalist? i would hope they know what soap and water is by default
Diatribe over

Hmm, my point is really just that there is a possibility of finding what you are looking for on here. I too love the idea that it enables young musicians to reach out and find people to play with. I've also found sensible musicians on here who have become part of my bands for a while. I even hope I might find my next band on here, though I'll be looking at every other option too. The biggest problem here is sorting through the people who are not what I'm looking for or who aren't looking for me.
I'd say 70% of the ads are poorly worded making it difficult to impossible to know what sort of collaboration is on offer.
The point about recordings being available is a good one. For me it's a minimum, but I'm happy to ask for a link, if there isn't anything then I know I'm dealing with someone with either no experience or no organisation. That's fine but not for me.
I wonder if there ought to be some advice to people about writing their ads here.

This works both ways though; I have turned up to an audition (I know, they still exist!) after a band had heard a link to live work I have done, lyrics printed or learned, some rhythm guitar parts thrown in, all that for the supposed 'gig ready band' to be.......not ready to even rehearse!
I get pretty tired of some of the cork-sniffing belters on here, who seem to think they are awesome and a 'musical visionary' but they are always on the look out for members on JMB and anywhere else they can find, all the while complaining about how no-one is as great as they are.....this says to me they are delusional types with all the social skills of a Skunk in full rigour! I have met some awesome musicians on here, the problem is normally their personalities rather than their playing. That's normally my cue to wish them luck and be on my merry way. If I get no response on here, which is quite a lot but a normal occurrence i gather, I now consider it a bullet dodged since the people cant even be adult enough to respond to you.
The fact is you won't be able to gauge someone by what pissing Soundcloud tracks they made in the comfort of their dingy man-cave......meet these people, figure out what they are about, find out if they fit in! Figure out whether they will be confident to get in front of a crowdI know for a fact that the live recording I send out to people is rough as arseholes, and if I make it through their f***king scrutineering session so that I can be permitted into their glorious presence they find out I can sing pretty well and play well enough too!
Let's live in the real world here........get the nutters into the auditions, and the crap ones, and the dreamers. That means you will at least have a laugh in between, get tighter as a group then appreciate the one lucky f***king contestant in the drama that is your lives.
Simple life lesson.......always be on the lookout for arseholes; if you can't see one, the arsehole is you.

I wrote an ad for a bass player. It clearly stated what we required : experience, transport, type of gigs we were doing, age range, kit requirements, offered set lists, Mp3's and Youtube clips of the band so they knew exactly what we were about and our standard , and most importantly, gave details and recordings of five songs (covers) that we would expect them to play at the audition. We had eight replies and gave each at least two weeks to get the songs up to speed, although of the five songs two were easy, two were average, and only one was a bit tricky.
NONE of the applicants were of what I would call even basic standard. Several couldn't string a 12 bar together, and had no concept of laying down a solid rhythm section with the drummer. Most had made little or no attempt to learn the songs. One was deaf. Anther complained that ' we were too loud and he couldn't hear himself', despite us turning down until we were virtually acoustic. Another said he didn't like the material (!) (what happened to the Mp3's then?) One was a single Dad and couldn't get out at night and was tied up every other weekend!
In the end this very good band split simply because we were unable to find the right guy, and we were not prepared to compromise. I guess the good guys are all in good bands who lock them away at night!

I have no idea why drinking and rock derived music have to go hand in hand but they do often to a rediclous degree and of course there's always doddgy drug as the progression after when the band has a bit more cash to spare , been there done it got the tshirt and it was certainly nothing meaningful Its not as bad as when I started gigging in the 70s
but its still part of the BS lifestyle ethos and glamour allure. Though I supprised how many singers drink pint after pint and complain when their voice ends up sounding like a dying ironmonger.

Back to the OP. Should be okay as long as that doesn't make you play or behave badly.

Agreed Frag , but it's a symtom of the modern world expecting ready made perfection because that's what you want it's not just in music though. Modern dating and job hunting etc
David Coverdale was no great singer when Purple found him but Paice said they listened to some set of notes he sang and knew they could chisel it down and mould a talent they were right. I doubt many of today's wanna be recruiters have that depth of thought most want everything for nothing and their not even at the same level that Purple were in 72.

One or two drinks not a problem, but until you have had a drunken band member, shall we say go of piece during a set then you don't know the full effects of alcohol.
Alcohol:
- for a vocalist can dry the mouth and tighten the vocal cords
- for the drummer can add unexpected timings to a song
- for the guitarist can add that Hendrix moment like on Cilla blacks show in the 60's.
- for the bassist who can tell (only joking but you get the picture)
The bad boy of rock, as long as it's an image and not reality, you will get away with it.
well that my rant I'm of to the fridge for another beer.

Had a singer who used to get pissed he used to do a two hour performance then just fall over couldn't fault his dedication to the band and he always pulled more than his fair share of the weight I've seen him turn up with three pairs of trousers because he had the runs, he finished the gig. I compare him with the guy that walked out on the band half way through a gig because he's had a row with someone though not in the band, or the Guy who bought "Homebrew" to a gig started a solo in black magic woman and went on and on and on and on and on and on we could'nt stop him and the thing was he was serious it was no joke. Personally cant stand drunks in a band, I order a pint and most of its still there two hours later I'd love to be able to perform the type of music I play after a little herbal relaxation but dont for fear of letting the side down.

When doing gigs I often just remain completely sober. I drink hot tea all day leading up to it. I continue drinking tea on stage during the show. The times I did drink before performances I was unable to hit the notes I needed to, particularly the high notes, I was also out of breath, which is just annoying and holds you back. I say get drunk after the show. Alcohol does nothing for me, I'd feel nervous with or without it. Now I've only ever performed as a vocalist, so as another member of a band I may feel differently.
