Be wary of additions
Post replySunday 26 Nov 2017, 11:31am
I recently joined this site to get myself back in a band after the band I plaid in for 10 years dispended this site was brilliant I soon got 4 Leads as I had put on a link to my playing (drums ) with my old band and a brief description of myself. The first addition I went to was with a local band that ticked all my boxes, they had quite a hi energy set list that was appealing to me as for the last ten years i had been playing 70s rock & blues ( almost a Free tribute band )so the up pace was welcome. At the rehearsal I was told that Lead guitarist was a stand in just helping out for an upcoming charity gig, Half way through thay stopped the rehearsal to say that thay where happy enough and invited me to join the band, I also was happy and agreed. I then explained that there were 3 other bands that I had auditions booked with and to clarify my position asked if it would be best to cancel them y they sad YES, out of courtesy I did this as soon as I got home. I spent the next two weeks working on their set before playing the charity gig, the gig had a ropy star not surprising as 50 % of the band had not plaid with them before but it all ended in success. The following day I got a text giving me the date of the next rehearsal where the lead guitarist could get to hear me play and give a decision as to my position, he was very worried by my advancing years as I’m 60 next week and although I nailed the very high paced rehearsal the following day I got the hard word from their base player that as a band thay decided my drumming was not good enough and patronisingly “ I should put it down to experience” . I have since heard that they have two friends that play drums for them, but neither of them where available for the charity gig. This experience has left me not wanting to bother trying to find a new band and just keep the memory of the fun I had with past bands.

And you'll feel that way for a while Shuggie. It will pass. Similar happened to me with a bunch of 'ex-names' ( so they claimed, although i did recognise one of them ). Two weeks to learn the set and by the gig it was 'Can you just play three numbers '? I wasn't surprised though, it was obvious in their manner over that fortnight that this was some kind of 'excercise'. The guitarist was suffering from ego and was playing up, they wanted to teach him a lesson. Well, he got one. So did they. Don't wear your heart on your sleeve Shuggie. Get shrewd and stuff them.

Shuggie, get back on to the job There are a lot of strange goings on in bands, way too many to mention or even figure out. Some band members say stuff that is just plain daft or nonsensical, some I feel are just wanting to pass on to someone else some bad words someone said to them, I see that a lot.
Perhaps though, make sure your playing is up to standard, recently we did audition a guy similar age and sadly his playing was a little wayward. He was nice enough, I was a little perplexed as he seemed more than able but when it came to it, a bit wobbly.
I also tried out another band, their drummer had to leave due to family matters and they got another guy in, sometime later I noticed the original guy hovering in the background. Do I need to say any more?
Anyway as fellow Yorkie the words are "right then, what's next!"

I though the words would be where theres muck theres brass Fido ? in the music world theres lots of muck alright and plenty of brass
I'm not taking about horn players neither.
, when you set of on a journey into the music world in the hope of propsering , its a sad given your gonna waste a lot time and paitance in Bull sh*t county. Bands are self regulating identies , often run by cowboys and plodders.
Their will always be louder voices who claim they know more about timming , others abilites what is musically acceptable more then others, you'll often find their not some superiour intellect and just an empty engine with a loud clanger running out of fuel. There will always be one who tries to domminate in each band , and then three or four sheep who follow his /her whims.
Ive always tried to keep TD bands democratic as a pose to autocratic no one wants to exhange their day job for a band of rules and rigma rolla.
60 is too old wtf ? its not really when you think about it Charlie Watts and Jet Black went on for ages. I'd advise you to lie about your age in future if youve got the genes to fit the lie utilise that, there is a lot pregudice out their in the band world is just one of them I'm sure gay and black does not go down to well in the milk rich world of bog standard rock bands either.
Your stories are not out of sych to the experiences of most on here senless behaviour etc , I've recently auditioned a replacment keys and bass player , we just asked the perspectives to simply learn three basic rock songs gave them severel days notice and room to question anything they all said yeah no worries turned up and so far all have failed to do their homework and just cost by hopping they wont be sussed then when they do ask the rest of the band errrr do you know Alright Now By Free , er in E " goes back to noodling. further ueasy silence wish you were here ?"
People lie about their experience and aptitude in the band never take an ad at face value get them in the ring asap. Bands treat applicants in a s;';'ty way day in day out because the top prat most probally does not know his arse from his elbow.
Your lucky in that they let you know although it seems like they treated you like crap on the way to doing so. If there is any consolation your not alone old son jus take heart that the guy telling you to more or less f;';ck off would not be able to get a job managing greggs in the real world and is another big nobody thats why a lot of starting out bands big themselves up higher then their true status with advetising gimicks and snazzy sound clips.
I also think bands are overtly picky these days in a way the same type of band would not have been forty years ago. Some crap obscure band really thinks it will be able to draft in top personal come on Mazzada is a Mazzada a skoda is a skoda a porch is a porch try mixing the part together and see what happens.
Bands should really be less picky at times even if someone is not the full ticket or Neal Peart at a song get them in the keep things moving if the band does take off sack them then if you really need perfection thats what the Beatles did when it got down to actually been given a recording contract. Bands that are far from that seem to audition indefintly no woner they get nowhere.
I'm sorry to say it sounds like you were taken for a mug I guess that is something us Southerners are better primed to navigate around. I gues up North they took a man on his world and a man looks to keep his word thinking fella infront of thee is as honest as the day is long. In short you should have kept your luck in with your other projects and seem how this unfoulded most interactions with others needs to be give time and experience to make an informed choice. It seems like they just used you to meeet a gig date , maybe the thing you can take heart from is that when they told you , you were surplus to their requirments it might have been a lazy excuse to brush you off as a pose form them to say right lad we are a bunch of c;';'ts we used you
for an objective simple as. if they took you on and kept you and youve played in other bands that tell me youve got something as a drummer.
Loads of musicans keep their hands in three or four pies at the same time In a way you cant blame them because most bands fall apart like a wendy house been kicked by a toddler look out for no1 in this business be selfish and self motivated a fair amount of the time. Dunno why the Tories dont try and win musicans votes they would get well in.
Now I'd advice you star your own band and not waste time I believe you will get caught up in more bitter expeirences otherwise and waste the limited time you have left on this earth. The band scene in this country does not get any bitter it seems to get worse and worse pepopled by d;';'ck heads at least if you start something yourself you a lot of control use these c;';'ts as a motivation to get a nice little three piece togheter and eclipse their medicore arse to elbow exitance on the local circuit.
Keep Rocking

Shuggie.
Don't let them get you down. It was probably an age thing - although that shouldn't have anything to do with it, it does. They're looking from the bands 'image' point of view. It happens. I'm a little long in the tooth myself, and although I know there are plenty of very talented younger drummers out there, a lot of them I could play under the table.
BUT... Would I share a stage with a band a LOT younger than me? Probably not. OK as a dep gig (and I do quite a few of those), but on a permanent basis I'd look like a fish out of water. So I prefer to stick with the 'more mature' musicians. It's a question of comfort.
I know my place.
Keep looking, and pay special attention to the older bands. Not so likely to string you along.

Fido you forgot to put that one about political correctness being dead " your defult reply to a wide variety of topics so we knows its you in your oversized jackboats.
EMMMMMMMMMh now the man who keeps on posting such nuggets on drip like playing the guitar is easy (and hes not joking when he does so ) is making pedantic and plodding attempts at conducting intellctual aprasials of others. Ha ha ha ha I rest my case.
Brexit groupie - what do you expect hardly known for the old grey stuff.

Diid you addition for base?
Wednesday 29 Nov 2017, 8:19am
I suppose that the moral of the story is: if you’re going to “addition” for a band, make sure that the subtraction of the previous member is complete, or there may be divisions of opinion, in which case tell them to go and multiply.

The thing is age is important as we know it influences our decision because of band image witch you cant deny for
record selling bands is very important.
But the thing is the band you played in are not about that so really I dont understand why they told you not to do
the other auditions Its not fair play on there part so you are best out of it anyway you have kept your hand in you still
Know you can do it.so the next time good thing comes your way I suggest you get on the kit and batter the f..kout
of it and enjoy good luck cheers ed
