I'd like to start a stripped back 3 piece, as I have found that with the more people you introduce into a band the harder it becomes to get together for rehearsals as everyone has their own life to lead. I had envisaged a guitar driven project featuring a sole guitarist dedicated to that role, with a singing bassist, and myself on drums. This keeps things tight and easy to manage. I'm in my late 20s, and been ideally seeking musicians in a similar age bracket of 25-35ish.
To that end, I'm hoping to find a competent guitarist capable of driving a band sonically. If you feel like you could get your Wes Borland or Stephen Carpenter on and provide a wall of sound that is equal parts melodic and heavy, then read on.
I am a fan of the heavier side of rock (favourite band; 36 Crazyfists), but also enjoy the ambient and melodic side (Arcane Roots being another favourite band of mine). I am 28, and started playing drums when I was 6. I would blow my trumpet and compare myself to Abe Cunningham or Thomas Noonan. Some other bands I really enjoy; Reuben, Black Peaks, Every Time I Die, Tesseract, Gallows. I can drive, and have full kit.
Sound wise, what I had wanted to try and achieve is best described by me listing three band names and then saying imagine those three on a venn diagram, and whatever sits in the middle of them all is what I thought would be a good starting point.
Those three bands then:
-Royal Blood. I guess they don't really need an introduction. Super simple (I would say too simple), stripped back rock.
-All Them Witches ('When God Comes Back' or 'Diamond' are good songs). Very left field, ambient rock. Some songs go on for 9+ minutes, which sadly makes them a little inaccessible for most people, and they can get a tad too experimental at times. They're a good idea for what to bear in mind on the groovy/melodic side.
-Mongol Horde ('Staff to Refund Counter' or 'Weighed and Found Wanting' are good songs). They're heavy. Too heavy to get radio play, and sadly whenever a band employs scream lyrics that writes them off from a lot of gigs and pigeon holes them into the metal bracket. I should clarify, I really like them and they have a lot of heavy/noise elements which could really work well in a 'lighter' band. They're basically a heavier and more complex Royal Blood.
I'd be looking to do originals (with maybe a couple of quirky covers thrown into a set), with a view to semi-regular gigs and a bit of recording. I am a sound engineer and have the kit needed to self-record.
I'd really like to stay away from the ego-driven side of music where I've seen friends take things too seriously, so although I would want things to be as professional as possible I don't want to step into the mentality I've seen a few people put on joinmyband listings where people say things like "must give 100% and make this your life" or "fully committed to making it big". We'd all like to hit it big, but chances are it won't happen so I find it far more important to enjoy playing in the moment and do it well, with an acknowledgement that we all have a day job to juggle too. If we get a tour, we get a tour. If we get an album, we get an album. If we get more, then we've made it further than 90% of other bands!
