Pop/Rock Singer/Song writer looking for guitarist or band. Liverpool
Sunday 22 Jul 2018, 4:29am
Hi there,
I'm a 30 year old lad from Liverpool, who has an ambition and drive to either front a band or to be seen as a solo artist with a band. I'm not talking the selfish type of solo artist, where it's just the person’s name and then they call all the shots and tell others what to do either. I don't just want a backing band who has no say in the matter or that I refuse to acknowledge. I hope to really get to know everyone who I work with and hope that we can work together on something that we can all be proud of. If we don't come up with a band name and we use my name, that doesn't mean it's all about me. It's not. One thing I know is that without any instrument, contribution or song structure, there can be no music.
I'm going to be honest and say that my voice is my only instrument. I know a few basic chords on a guitar, but I'm not the best at strumming. I do think I'd be better off sticking to what I feel comfortable with, but if a guitarist insists on teaching me, then it's probably best to tell you I'm left handed and you'll have to work around that if you're not, which annoyingly may include turning your head and/or flipping your guitar the other way around. Not the nicest of tasks in the world. I've seen many lead singers who don't play an instrument though, so I don't ever see it as a downfall.
I write song lyrics a lot and seem to have a natural flow for it, so, I do have a lot of ideas to throw about, and more than two albums worth of lyrics I've been working on. Happy to have any input or contributions that makes a positive impact and I'd be more than happy to calibrate lyrics with other members. I have put a lot of effort into writing and editing them. They may not be to everyone's taste, but they are personal and I feel others will potentially connect with them on an emotional level.
One thing I don't like they idea of, is that, potentially I'm wasting my time. I'm really tired of giving up on myself and feeling like a failure because I haven't achieved what I set out to do, but I am not ashamed to say, I really do need help to move forward. I'm not a singer who is happy to have my vocals thrown on to a pop or dance backing track, if I was, I'd have pushed for that kind of direction already and the same with talent shows, I'd have entered. I don't want to go down that road though, I want to know that my potential future band worked hard to become successful and that it created it's own material. Now, I'm not in a position to judge anyone in talent shows or who sings other people's songs on backing tracks, but it's just not what I would appreciate for myself. I wouldn't be satisfied with singing other people's songs, especially because emotionally I may not connect with them and that for me, is a bad thing.
This site isn’t the easiest place to find driven people to work with, but I’m not going to lose any hope or sleep over it. I think persistence pays off in the long run and if anything, at least I’m trying to move forward. Whether you're a drummer, bassist or a guitarist, I hope you'd be interested and I hope you'd want to get a good number of songs together, in the hopes to leap into eventually recording Demo's, an EP or even a full album. That may take a long time - weeks, months or even years, however, I have a great level of commitment and patience for that. I will stick things out, even if progression takes longer than originally planned. I am realistic, I don't expect us to become signed, become well known or even reach a level of fame, but of course, if any of those concepts were to happen, I would want to pursue those possibilities. That's also why I need people who are serious about a career.
I would like it if we can become established in some way - even if we only reach out to a small minority of people. I would be happy to do the promoting for the band on social media websites should we ever head in that direction. Touring would be a big advantage and while it would be something new for me, I feel I am a confident enough person and a good public speaker, so I would be confident enough to play my part.
I haven't just been lazy this whole time, I have met up with a few guitarists in the past, but sadly I either haven't clicked with the person, found them to be lazy and unmotivated or they couldn't stick to a routine or schedule when arranging to practice. That's not the kind of band I'm seeking. I don't think any successful band would disagree. So, I guess this time I'm really reaching out to people who have drive, passion and ambition. The kind of people who have a bit of spare time on their hands and want to make a career from music, in the hopes of making a good impact. I don't really know what the best approach is at the moment, whether to start with a full new band, or to work side by side along a guitarist who could help to piece the music together and then later we get the band in, but I'm open to any ideas. I'd even be open to working with someone who can help me to put some demo's together, which could boost my advertising. At the end of the day, you have to start somewhere.
I've posted a song here: (https://www.reverbnation/elliotmcnultymusic). Respectfully, it’s not the best piece of work, more a really rough demo version. I wrote the song when I was 15 years old (one of my first lyric pieces), but I recorded it back in 2013 with an ex partner of mine. Yes, he is male. I'm bisexual and I'm open about it. I believe in equality and acceptance of others, so I'd prefer to work with people of the same mind frame who won't judge me on that basis. I have as of lately re-written the song lyrics (since the recording), really in order to make it more sharper and flow better.
Strangely enough, the song is sitting at #7 on Reverbnation Liverpool Rock Charts (and still climbing) after 5 years of posting it, yes, 5 years! So, as critical as I'm being, it has to be doing something right to stay in the top 10 for that long. Originally it was released in Sheffield, where it also hit #2, almost making it to #1 on the Sheffield rock charts. I'm well in favour of re-creating the track, but I think I'd like to focus on something new to begin with and maybe something a little bit more heavier. Unfortunately, I don't have the right equipment to record something else. I only have a laptop and phone and I'm not the best at putting computerised music together. Acapella recordings aren't the greatest of things to be posting online. The song was originally created on Adam's Apple Mac and we split up way back in 2014, so I don't have the option to ask him to create a new track for me. I'm more than happy to sing for you in person though.
I am the kind of guy who likes alternative, pop and rock edges to music, but honestly, I really don't want to label or mention any influences I may have. I like the idea we can be an original band, with a sound that works for us all. I don't want to be listing things on advertisements like ‘’let's be the next big Green Day cover band’’. No disrespect to those who do, but I'm not looking to be a cover band or to imitate the likes of Billie Joe Armstrong. Don't get me wrong, it's really good to have influences and to be proud of those, but I also find the whole idea limiting. In the past, I've seen bands listing artists I have no knowledge off, and I was instantly put off applying, fearing I won't know the songs they expect me to sing, or that they won't appreciate my music tastes. So, I don’t want to be limiting in that way either. I really hope we can see past expectations.
Maybe if we do decide to cover a song in the future, it can be one we all feel comfortable to play or enjoy, but I'm sure getting to know each other, we would eventually share what music tastes and influences we have. Let me know your thoughts, if you like my ideas or any thoughts you'd love to bring to the table (should you wish to work with me). Thanks for reading this, if you did, I know it's was long winded and a lot of people may not have reached this far, but if you did, I appreciate it.
Elliot
