Hello,
I am a 26 year old musician looking to find like minded musicians interested in forming a funk/soul inspired band. I am primarily a drummer of 15 years but am also a fairly competent bassist and I can play guitar and piano to a reasonable standard, I first started on piano shortly before drums.
Previously I have been looking to join an existing band but I've not managed to find the right group so far and have begun to think it may be better to form a new band. My work situation means I wouldn't be looking to form a band that is gigging every week and I also wouldn't be motivated by money, i'm in it for the love of the music, playing live with a great band and having a good time whilst doing it. For this reason I would prefer to stay away from function stuff with a view to playing smaller local venues, working on the detail to gain a good reputation as a great live band with a view to maybe working on original material as time goes on.
In the first instance what I am imagining is putting together a 3 to 5 piece band consisting of drums, bass, guitar and vocals at the core in addition to keys & brass depending on the personnel. I don't mind what I play in the band, i've actually always liked the idea of forming a band with a couple of multi-instrumentalists who can swap around depending on what is required from the arrangements, so that would be welcomed if that's something you could offer.
Initially I would hope that we spend some time playing together to see how we gel as a group and then work towards putting together a set of minimalist funk/soul cover versions/arrangements of classic funk/soul tracks in addition to popular tracks from other genres in a similar to fashion to the excellent band 'Scary Pockets' on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZQzAWzSsn4).
In terms of influences for the funk/soul arrangements I'm looking to go for think somewhere between Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets, The New Mastersounds, The Meters, The Dap Kings, James Brown. I'm not really that particular but hopefully these names will give you a jist of the sort of thing I'm imagining, as long as it's got feel and will get people moving I really don't mind. I strongly believe that a band playing a whole range of material in this style to a high standard would go down very well in local venues.
I will be grateful to receive any and all responses, please don't be put off if this isn't exactly what you had in mind. I do appreciate that this is rather niche but i'm sure that there must be people locally wanting to do the same sort of thing, it's just a matter of finding you!
