We are an alt-rock band from Essex who is looking for a drummer to complete our line up. Must be able to commute to Stanford-le-Hope for weekly evening practice/writing sessions. A drum kit will be provided at the rehearsal space.
ABOUT US:
We're an alt-rock band that has been playing as a group for six months. Our current line up consists of a guitarist and a bassist. Our bassist has been providing vocals as a temporary measure although we're currently in the process of transitioning to a dedicated vocalist. We have a back-catalogue of (mostly) complete tracks that vary in style and sound and were principally written by our bassist prior to and during the band's formation. Songwriting has since become a collaborative effort and we want it to stay this way moving forward. We meet after work once or twice a week in a Stanford-le-Hope rehearsal space and we spend our time either sharing and developing new musical ideas or recording our more established tracks. We're currently recording an EP which we expect to release in the next few months. We'd then like to follow its release with gigs and more songwriting.
WHO WE WISH WE WERE:
Here is a list that compiles barely a handful of both our joint and individual influences and those who we feel changed the way we approach music and our instruments:
Radiohead, Blur, Sonic Youth, Muse, Joy Division, Kasabian, Pavement, Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, Slowdive, Mr Bungle, Tame Impala, Pixies, Pink Floyd, Slint, Queens of the Stone Age, Death Grips, David Bowie, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, Courtney Barnett, Dinosaur Jr., and My Bloody Valentine.
AND WHO WE REALLY ARE:
We've all been captivated by music from as far back as we can remember, and we've also been playing instruments for about as long. We're all in our twenties and have been playing long enough to have a fair grip on music both conceptually and emotionally. Whilst we tend to consult basic music theory (no more than keys, modes, and functional harmony) during the development of ideas, we play and write mostly by ear. In terms of technique, we're at the very least adequate. Don't expect face-melting solos or Les Claypool basslines, but you can be sure that we have established our own styles on our respective instruments and that we are confident in our own musical tastes and identities. We're trying to write music that is interesting, pushes us as musicians, and yet also remains accessible to your average alt-rock fan. We're open to many different musical styles and are always willing to experiment with new ideas. We don't take ourselves particularly seriously as people and it makes our meetings as fun and relaxed as they are productive. That said we are sincere about making the best music we possibly can and believe we can achieve this by playing in an open, honest, and creative environment where we put our egos aside for the sake of the music.
WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU:
We want a musician with a sense of identity, imagination, and love for their instrument. Whilst we do want you to be a proficient drummer, we'd much rather work with someone who has a deep personal connection to the sounds they create rather than someone who can execute flawless fills or knows theory like the back of their hand (not that said things are mutually exclusive). We're not looking for a session drummer, we want someone who will offer creative input and both add their colour to and improve our sound. You'll need to be able to commute to Stanford-le-Hope at least once but preferably twice a week for practice. A drum kit is provided but please note that it is a budget kit that is in dire need of a set-up (we'd offer to set it up for you but we know next to nothing about how to go about such a thing). Our rehearsal space costs us £20 per month to use so you will be expected to chip in once you've gotten your feet wet with us but only then. You should accept that we aren't financially invested in this project and that we won't be in the position to make any money from it until at least a few months down the line (once we start gigging). That said, any money that does come our way will be split totally evenly between all members. Writing credits will be split like this too.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Joe
