A long time ago, I dreamed of being a rock star. Didn't we all?
I saved up my Saturday job money for a Strat copy and a Vox AC30, learned three chords and the minor and major pentatonic scales, and got plenty of gigging experience in punk and glam rock bands.
I failed auditions for Generation X and Adam and the Ants, but some of the kids I knocked about with went on to become famous.
I didn't. There followed decades of sensible jobs and raising a family.
Then, about 10 years ago, I was walking down Denmark Street, saw a way cool guitar in a shop window and walked in and bought it.
After that, I was hooked on playing again. I've spent a fortune on gear, and thanks to the advent of guitar tuition websites, I'm a much improved musician.
There have been three bands since. The last one was half-way decent and the singer has now turned pro. But once again I am looking for people to play with.
Play what? Well, I still listen to the 1970s bands that have stood the test of time. I can do a bunch of Three Kings/Clapton licks and I follow the new generation of blues guitarists. I've dabbled with country, soul and funk, and would like to dabble with those genres further.
My daughter even tells me that some music recorded since circa 1983 is worth listening to, and I'm open to new influences.
I've written original songs in the past and hope to do so again, especially if I ever work out how to use Garageband properly.
Basically I'm seeking other musicians who can relate to this story. Reasonable ability, virtuousity definitely not required. Committed enough to get your arse down to jams/rehearsals if times have been agreed, but nothing stronger than that.
If things click, we could venture out in public from time to time. If not, we can just make a racket in the rehearsal studio and bitch about why that world tour with the Stones never materialised.
After all, old chaps/chapesses should have a hobby that gets them them of the house at weekends. So hit me up with offers. Your other half will be glad you did.
