How popular is Rock/Metal?

I've been advertising for a Rock/Metal band to join or start since I joined this site (couple of months back) but most adverts I read on here are for jazz bands or pop bands. Which got me thinking...just how popular is rock and metal?

it's common, but rock and metal generally tend to be for the "underclass", or dare I say the "fighters"? not sure, but the more "privileged" musical acts tend to be for the more popular/esteemed or hereditary circles... a lot of it's down to (perceived) social status.

It varies a lot by region. A lot of rock and metal ads around here.

There is no conspiracy, underlying factors or any reason for that matter. The father of Elvis Costello played trumpet with big bands and is a credited writer. Elvis had enough social status to fill Mothertriggers empty bag many times over yet he chose to move within the pub rock scene, later to be called punk. The original Punks would have been the "fighters" (as Mothertrigger puts it) of the day, yet many of them were so far removed from the underclass as then, as it is now, it was all about the money.

cidermutiny has a point. London for example has a vibrant and diverse music community. Finding someone to meet your needs would be much easier than say if you lived in Plymouth, where there is no scene at all.

However, the bottom line is that we have all suffered a drought at some time or the other when it comes to searching for a particular musician. There is no guarantee that at the time you are looking there is an out of band musician, playing the instrument you need, who wants to play the same music as you and with whom you get on.

IIf your ad has been viewed but you have received no responses, change it. Make it more interesting and dynamic. Make the reader say "hey, this guy/band is switched on, it could be just what I am looking for". I have read your ads. Starting an ad with "me and my step sister..." would put me off. For starters the grammar right at the start is bad which leads one to think negative thoughts and is there any need to mention the relationship between you and the vocalist. It does not sound very "metal" and even less "fighter" lol. Also would help if you have demo's. If this is a new band you can still upload examples of your skills and examples of the songs you have written.

In conclusion, a good advert, demo's and patience. The rest is simply time.

POPS crap and JAZZ is f***king wierd, all i can say is keep rock and metal alive, there was a point where rock was pop, lets put t there again!!!!

Im a female singer looking for symphonic/folk metal band!
I get very frustrated at the lack of bands with original material or doing covers (if they must) needing a female singer!
Im always ranting about it.
Metal is for intelligent people lots of people, i guess it goes over a lot of peoples heads :s

It depends on the region. I presently live in Dorset where a lot of the music heard down here is Blues and folk with a smattering of jazz here and there. The area i grew up in, the Midlands, has a vibrant heavy metal rock scene with many gigging circuits to choose from. This music is well supported, especially in the Telford to Birmingham/Nuneaton area and further across to Coventry. I had a great time with my band on this circuit. Dorset seems to be a bit more laid back, so getting a heavy metal rock band going round here is difficult, not impossible. You just have to be driven, have a good set list and be able to assert your music without causing offence. That is the hardest part, but the gigs I have played so far with my band has had very positive reviews and feedback. Plus, I think, some people have had anough of go to sleep on the porch blues, to be replaced by heart quickening jumpy up and down in the moshpit tracks. I'm 47 and I still love playing this music. Rock for Dorset!!
