Hi Sheffield!
So my name is Marcus and I am a solo artist that composes all my music using old 70s/08’s videogame chips instead of synth to make really upbeat melodic bleepy human-league-meets-Gary numan-roxy-music style music meshed with velvet underground/gang of four/ television/sonic youth-y guitars. For intents and purposes, it’s a bit like an 8bit electronic Strokes.
Then I just croon about love, life, death, depression, space, time and all manner of other things that make such a strange uneven tapestry. The beats are all clipped and processed, in the vein of hip-hop really, and also the late 70’s 80’s drum machine style sound that is so cool and distant.
You’ll be hard pressed to find any band that sounds like me. This is why I signed to BMG Chrysalis a couple of years ago and unusually they let me do whatever I wanted so I have. I have recorded an entire album’s worth with Tom Bellamy (The Cooper Temple Clause/Losers) and Mike Collins (Meronomy/Fat White Family) of material which is currently being mixed.
I have been fortunate enough to have rec. lots of press under MIDIMIDIS name (where the project was born), played many festivals including Reading & Leeds festival and invested the money into recording and escaped London to move to Sheffield for piece and quiet to get on with the rest of the writing and recording.
I released an EP last year, shooting 3 videos with no money or job and sparked BBC Sheffield Introducing interesting and a week later Tom Robinson BBC6 Music Introducing.
I am gearing up to release a new single in the next couple of months and wish to perform live now. I’m ready!
I do not know *anybody* up here at all, which is a blessing and a curse. I am looking for a guitarist, male or female who would be interested in jumping on this rollercoaster waiting to go. We will be predominantly playing to a backing track (because Amstrad’s and Spectrums are *terribly* unreliable) and at first no live drummer, but for touring purposes I have someone in mind. For now- 2-piece works fine.
I will only make ‘white noise ‘ on guitar, and play the odd MIDI-drum/synths. The riffs are not too crazy, I wrote them originally for someone who couldn’t play guitar. No solos. Free to make LOTS of white noise in certain songs.
I have lots of contacts in London, but I want to start up here, there’s a studio in Kelham Island where I live, I want this to feel quite organic before we hit some of the key places I have in mind in London/Reading. The idea is to build up some rapport before I shop the album around. I can explain this in more detail face to face of course.
There’s 3 video from my debut EP released last year. Pretty wide ranging, but hopefully gives a little taster as to the sound. www.marcusmidi.com
So firstly- I am looking for someone who actually enjoys playing guitar and doesn’t secretly want to be a front-man/woman. No egos- keep our egos pointed towards the crowd. Someone who is a little unhinged/open-minded, no shame in that.
I have songs and backing-tracks to have a play along to/listen to see if it’s your cup of tea. And if you can pout- go for it. No shame. DM me if you feel *mildly* interested, don’t be shy I’m a chilled out guy.
