Hey, after some time away I’m looking to get back into playing music. I’m 34 and sung and played guitar in loads of semi successful bands in my early 20s. Sadly when I got bored of the constant song writing cycle, I stupidly stopped playing music all together which is a real shame as I still loved playing live. That was about 6 or 7 years ago now and I’ve been missing it ever since.
So why am I here? Well after a few years of thinking about it, I’ve decided to look into joining a band - as a bass player or lead guitarist. I’m a pretty decent bass player and when mucking about home it’s almost always the bass I pick up. On the other hand I’ve always been quite a good, experimental lead guitar player in a Television / Strokes / shoegazey kind of way, though I’m not great at replicating other lead guitarists so wouldn’t be a great lead guitarist for a covers band for example.
In terms of genre I’m open to any ideas so long as it’s not metal (sorry!). That includes covers bands or originals - I don’t really mind. I’m a massive fan of everything from 60s style garage, proto punk and psych, to folk, and blues. Anything from scuzzy dream pop to old school Americana. Basically if I like the songs and think it’s a cool vibe, I’m likely to be up for playing. To give you some indication, my favourite bands and artists are Television, Modern Lovers, Van Morrison, Rolling Stones, The Strokes, The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith.
Finally, in terms of commitment levels I’d quite like to be playing live a couple of times a month but its going to be difficult for me to commit to lengthy tours outside London. I’m not too fussed about recording - playing live and having a good time is my priority - but of course would do that if that’s part of the gig. Basically if you’re 22 years old and dreaming of being the next big thing, I’m definitely not your guy.
